Fresh Air

The importance of fresh air for good health seems rather obvious to most people. And yet, just like water, rest, and sunshine, we sometimes don't get enough of it, especially in the winter time when it's cold outside and all we want to do is stay inside where it's warm.

Granted, when it's below freezing outside (any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) that's totally understandable! If the temperature is above 40 degrees F, I encourage you to try to get outside, even if it's just for a few minutes, to get some fresh air. Our bodies need fresh air to function well!

Listed below are a some health benefits from breathing in fresh air:

1. Fresh air helps to clear your lungs.
2. Fresh air can give you more energy and mental focus.
3. Fresh air lowers blood pressure and heart rate.
4. Fresh air helps you heal faster.
5. Fresh air can improve your digestion.

Fresh air helps so many things in our bodies - our lungs, our brain, our heart, and even our stomachs/ digestive track! How is it that fresh air can help us so much? Every cell in our body needs oxygen to function well, and fresh air delivers plenty of oxygen to us!

Along with going outside to get some fresh air, it's equally as important to air your house out when possible. This is, obviously, much easier to do in the spring, summer, and fall seasons when the weather is often nicer and warmer. If you have a random 60 degree F day in the winter time, take advantage of that by not only going outside for a little while, but also airing your house out. It doesn't have to be long. Just opening your windows for 30 minutes can help bring in some much needed ventilation of fresh air into your home. Stale air can recirculate in homes, especially in the winter, which can have an effect on a person's health.

I remember stepping into someone's home once, and within a short time of their front door closing behind me, I could smell an unpleasant and stale odor in the house which, hiding behind my cheerful greeting, made me eager to leave! Sickness can (and does!) breed in homes when the house is not "aired out" from time to time. This is another very important reason to air your house out, especially in the winter time, when you have a warmer day that allows you to do so.

Stay tuned for another, upcoming post related to the importance of breathing in fresh air and something that can affect that.

Though simple, fresh air is very important for good health!
